H δεύτερη ημέρα του TΟdays Festival απλωνόταν μπροστά μας, και παρά την όποια κούραση από την πρώτη ημέρα, η μουσική και η όλη φάση (χώρος, χορός, μπύρα, χρώματα, μυρωδιές, άνθρωποι κ.ο.κ), αποτελούν πάντα δυνατό κίνητρο να συνεχίσεις. Η day2 στο sPAZIO211 είχε αρκετά τέτοια κίνητρα στο μουσικό κομμάτι. Περιελάβανε τους υπεραγαπημένους μας Low, τον Hozier και δύο άγνωστα έως την ημέρα του live ονόματα σε εμάς, τον Γάλλο Adam Naas και τους One True Pairing. Και σίγουρα το άγνωστο, προκαλεί ενδιαφέρον και αν μη τι άλλο περιέργεια.
Το καλό της δεύτερης ημέρας είναι πως ξέρεις πλέον τα κατατόπια, το πως θα πας, από που θα μπεις, που και με ποια διαδικασία θα πάρεις μπύρα, που θα βρεις σκιά και άλλες τέτοιες λεπτομέρειες που ανακαλύπτεις την προηγουμένη. Έτσι, από νωρίς μπορέσαμε να αφοσιωθούμε στο μουσικό κομμάτι αλλά και στην παρατήρηση πραγμάτων που δεν είχαμε δει (ή δεν είχαμε επικεντρωθεί) ως τώρα.

Όσα δεν προσέξαμε (ή δε γράψαμε) την πρώτη ημέρα

Ένα από τα σημαντικά που είχαμε τη δυνατότητα να παρατηρήσουμε τη δεύτερη μέρα, ήταν το πόσο μεγάλο ηλικιακό εύρος ανθρώπων υπήρχε στο κοινό του φεστιβάλ. Αυτό σίγουρα είναι μεγάλη επιτυχία των διοργανωτών. Ήταν πραγματικά εντυπωσιακό το πόσο αρμονικά συνυπήρχαν μαμάδες με τα μικρά παιδάκια τους, κόσμος που κατέβαζε μπύρες στο bar, παρέες teenager κοριτσιών (ελέω Hozier), μεσήλικες με μπλουζάρες (θεός ο 45αρης με τη μπλούζα Built to Spill), παρέες ανθρώπων μεγάλης ηλικίας (θεός ο κύριος 60+ με μπλούζα Einstürzende Neubauten που συχνά άφηνε τους φίλους του από το παγκάκι που είχαν αράξει, και χόρευε κοντά στη σκηνή με τις soul/funk μουσικές του Adam Naas). Και ανάμεσα τους οι Carabinieri να κυκλοφορούν χαλαροί, να επιβλέπουν διακριτικότατα και να αστειεύονται με τον κόσμο. Είδα μάλιστα μερικούς και στο merch να ψήνονται για αγορά δίσκων. Δεν έμεινα να δω αν πήραν κάτι τελικά. Εντυπωσιακά όμορφες εικόνες, που δείχνουν τι ακριβώς είναι η μουσική, τι χαρά δίνει στον κόσμο ένα φεστιβάλ. Μπράβο στο Todays για το κλίμα που κατάφερε να φτιάξει.
Ένα ακόμα γεγονός που μου έκανε εντύπωση είναι το πόσους ανθρώπους με πατερίτσες ή με καροτσάκι είδα. Το όποιο κινητικό πρόβλημα του καθενός δεν αποτέλεσε σε κανένα σημείο εμπόδιο στο να μπορέσει να έρθει και να απολαύσει τις αγαπημένες του μπάντες, και το festival είχε φροντίσει για αυτό. Πράγματα αυτονόητα, αλλά καλό είναι να τα γράφουμε, να τα επαινούμε και να τα επαναλαμβάνουμε.

Το line-up της δεύτερης ημέρας

Adam Naas

Όπως προανεφέρα, τον Adam Naas δε τον γνώριζα (και επειδή ζούμε στην εποχή του internet, “όχι, δε φρόντισα να τον δω προηγουμένως στο youtube, γιατί ποτέ δε το κάνω, δε βρίσκω το λόγο γιατί να μου χαλάσω την έκπληξη!”). Τι είναι ο Adam Naas; Είναι ένας Γάλλος ταλαντούχος νέος μουσικός, που κατά την άποψη του γράφοντος, κάνει μεγαλύτερη προσπάθεια απ’όσο χρειάζεται για να αντιγράψει τον Prince. Είναι σαφές πάντως ότι αυτός είναι το μουσικό πρότυπο του, και καλά κάνει και είναι.
Η ώρα της εμφάνισης πρέπει να τον ζόρισε λίγο γιατί έκανε συνέχεις αναφορές στη ζέστη, αλλά είναι αλήθεια πως η θερμοκρασία πρέπει να ήταν λίγο υψηλότερη από την αντίστοιχη της προηγούμενης, σε καμία περίπτωση όμως αντίστοιχη αυτών που ζουν τα συγκροτήματα που βγαίνουν στη σκηνή νωρίς, στην Ελλάδα. Το ντεμπούτο άλμπουμ του, Τhe Love Album του 2018, κυριάρχησε προφανώς στο set, και όσο η ώρα περνούσε το κοινό ζεσταινόταν όλο και περισσότερο. Χαρακτηριστική η εικόνα που έχουμε μπροστά μας, σα κάδρο: Μαμά με παιδάκι 2-3 χρονών να χορεύει στους ήχους του, και ταυτόχρονα 60αρης κύριος παραδίπλα, (αυτός με την μπλούζα Einstürzende Neubauten που ανέφερα παραπάνω) να το καταχαίρεται επίσης λικνιζόμενος. Τρομερή εικόνα, που δείχνει ότι ο κόσμος πέρναγε καλά, o Naas τους κέρδισε, ασχέτως αν αυτός δεν είναι ο ήχος που εγώ προτιμώ. Αραχτοί με παρέα τη σκιά ενός δέντρου παρατηρούσαμε τα δρώμενα, και σε κάποια τραγούδια (τα αναφέρω παρακάτω) σαλέψαμε και λίγο. Εδώ που τα λέμε, όταν έχεις κάτι εκατομμύρια views σε κάθε τραγούδι σου στο youtube, λίγο σε ενδιαφέρει αν αρέσεις σε όλους. Σίγουρα πάντως, θα μπορούσε να μιλάει λιγότερο μεταξύ των τραγουδιών.

Από τα κομμάτια που ακούσαμε, μου άρεσαν περισσότερο τα Please Come Back to Me (τρίτο στη σειρά στο set list, και κάπου εκεί κατάλαβα ότι η φωνή του είναι όντως καλή). Καλά ήταν και τα διαδοχικά Love και Νο Love To Risk, όπου και έκανε συνεχείς αναφορές στην αγάπη και τη σημασία της. Τo όμορφο Strange Love έφερνε αρκετά σε Bronski Βeat (σίγουρα η φωνή του παραπέμπει συχνά σε J. Somerville) και φυσικά το τέλος του κομματιού πρόδιδε την αγάπη του στον Prince. Σίγουρα ο κόσμος της pop/soul/funk μουσικής θα ακούει συχνά το όνομα του στο μέλλον.

Οne True Pairing

Οι One True Pairing ήταν μια μάλλον ευχάριστη έκπληξη. Με μία δυναμική κιθάρα και χαρακτηριστικά φωνητικά, ο Thomas Fleming (πρώην Wild Beasts), και διάφορα synths και κουμπάκια να τον συνοδεύουν (δε συγκράτησα το όνομα του keyboardrίστα δυστυχώς), έφτιαξε ένα δυνατό ήχο που άρεσε, αλλά ταυτόχρονα έδινε την εντύπωση ότι κάτι του λείπει. Tο ντεμπούτο (solo project στην ουσία) του Fleming, είναι αρκετά ενδιαφέρον, χωρίς να ξεφεύγει πολύ απ’ όσα ακούγαμε από τους Wild Beasts. Μία διαφορά ίσως είναι ότι η έλλειψη εκτεταμένης ενορχήστρωσης (ειδικά στο live) είχε ως αποτέλεσμα ο ήχος να είναι λίγο πιο κοφτός, τραχύς, αυστηρός! Προσωπικά τον βρίσκω πιο ενδιαφέροντα, αλλά σίγουρα θέλει δουλίτσα. Πάντως η μπάντα είναι πολύ φρέσκια, το πρώτο live τους το έδωσαν στις 25 Ιουλίου, ένα μήνα δηλαδή πριν το TOdays, ενώ το ντεμπούτο κυκλοφορεί αργότερα τον Σεπτέμβριο.

Low
Κατά την προσωπική μου άποψη οι Low έδωσαν το καλύτερο live του διημέρου, ίσως και όλου του TOdays (σημειώνοντας ότι δε γνωρίζω τι έγινε την Τρίτη ημέρα με Jarvis, J. Marr κλπ). Ήρθαν στο TOdays (και σε πολλά live και festivals του καλοκαιριού) με ένα δίσκο (Double Negative) που αποθεώθηκε από sites, κριτικούς και κοινό. Κατά την άποψη μου βέβαια, δεν είναι ο καλύτερός τους, είναι όμως η ευκαιρία για να λάβουν επιτέλους την παγκόσμια αναγνώριση, αυτή που το έργο τους εδώ και 26 χρόνια άξιζε!

Μία απίθανη οπτική, μουσική, πνευματική και νοητική παράσταση! Ένα σοκαριστικό αποτέλεσμα, μια ανατριχιαστική ηχητική και οπτική πανδαισία που μπορώ να παρομοιάσω μόνο με κάποιο live των Sigur Ros. Αυτό ήταν το show τους, το οποίο ευχαριστήθηκα περισσότερο από αυτό της Αθήνας (διαβάστε εδώ), για διάφορους λόγους. Ο βασικότερος ήταν η απίστευτη θέρμη με την οποία υποδεχόταν το κοινό το κάθε κομμάτι, και η αποθέωση μετά την τελευταία νότα καθενός από αυτά. Ήταν τόσο έντονο, που από τις αντιδράσεις και τα λόγια των Alan Sparhawk και Mimi Parker καταλάβαινες ότι ούτε οι ίδιοι το περίμεναν. Μια τέτοια ανταπόκριση, ακόμα και μη ηθελημένα, σε κάνει να παίζεις ακόμα καλύτερα. Φυσικά το set επικεντρώθηκε στο περσινό άλμπουμ με πινελιές από το παρελθόν (No Comprende, Especially Me, Lazy, το τρομερό Do You Know How to Waltz? συνεχίζοντας πάντως να μη παίζουν τα δύο αγαπημένα μου: In Silence και Monkey) και πολύ τζαμάρισμα.

Hozier
Για τον Hozier θα μου επιτρέψετε να μη γράψω πολλά πράγματα. Δε μπορώ εγώ να πάω κόντρα (όχι μόνος μου έστω) σε όλη τη μουσική βιομηχανία. Νομίζω όμως ότι τα 60-70 εκατομμύρια views σε μερικά από τα videos του τα λένε όλα! Χρειάζεται και αυτός λοιπόν! Όχι στη δισκοθήκη μου πάντως!

Το δρόμο της επιστροφής για το ξενοδοχείο, τον πήραμε νωρίτερα από το τέλος του live του Hozier, όντας ακόμα συγκλονισμένοι από την εμφάνιση των Low και τη μεγάλη ευκαιρία και τιμή να τους γνωρίσουμε από κοντά. Η επιστροφή μας, νωρίς το επόμενο πρωί, στην Αθήνα έγινε με τις αναμνήσεις από όσα ζήσαμε τις δύο μέρες του TOdays αλλά και τη σκέψη στο μέλλον, αναμένοντας το line-up του 2020.
Υ.Γ: To πρόγραμμα του TOdays φυσικά συνεχιζόταν στο ex Fabbrica Incet με Cinematic Orchestra και Art Of What?! Και οι δύο μπάντες είναι ιστορικές, καταπληκτικές και πραγματική επιρροή για χιλιάδες καλλιτέχνες. Δυστυχώς όμως δεν είχαμε τη δύναμη να συνεχίσουμε. Λεωφορείο και επιστροφή! ☹

...And for our English readers...

The second day of TOdays Festival lays ahead of us, and despite the tiredness of the first day, music and everything involving it (the place, the dancing, the beer, the colors, the smells, people, etc.) is always strong motivation to continue. Day2 on sPAZIO211 had such strong motivations in the music field. Our beloved Low, Hozier, and two unknown -to us- artists till that day, the French Adam Naas and One True Pairing were on schedule. Certainly the “unknown”, makes things interesting and makes us curious.
The best part of being at a festival for a second day is that you now already know the territory and the whereabouts, what's the destination, how to get there, what's the process to get your beer, where to find shadow and other details of this kind that you have already discovered the previous day. So, right from the beginning of the day 2, we were able to focus on the music and observing things we had not seen (or had not focused on) until that point.

Things we didn’t notice (or didn’t write about) on the first day of the festival
One of the important things we were able to observe during the second day, was that the age range of the crowd was quite wide. This is certainly a great success for the organizers. It was really striking how harmoniously you could see moms with their young children co-existing with youngsters drinking beers at the bars, teenage girls (Hozier's groupies definitely), middle-aged men with band t-shirts (one great example: Built to Spill), groups of older people (we noticed a 60+ fellow, wearing an Einstürzende Neubauten T-shirt who left his same age friends sitting at the bench, and danced near the stage with Adam Naas' soul / funk music). And among them, Carabinieris (police) strolling around between the audience, joking with the fans etc. We even saw some of them at the merch checking the vinyl and cds. Impressively beautiful images, showing exactly what music is all about, the amount of joy a festival offers to the people. Well done TOdays for the atmosphere you managed to create.
Another fact that impressed us, was the number of people with mobility problems. Everyone should have the chance to attend and enjoy their favorite bands, and TOdays made it easy for them. Simple things, but it's good to be pointed out, praised and have always on mind.

The line-up of day2
Adam Naas
As it has already been mentioned, we didn't know Adam Naas (and because we live in the internet age, "No, no research on youtube took place before the gig, we never do! I Can't find a reason to destroy the element of surprise of a gig!"). Who is Adam Naas then? He is a talented young French musician who, in the writer's view, makes more effort than it is necessary, to copy Prince. It is quite clear, however, that he is his musical idol, and -of course- this is a good thing!
The time of  appearance must have been a little rough for him, because he repeatedly refered to the heat, but it's true that the temperature was a bit higher than the previous day. Just imagine how difficult it is for a band to perform at a festival in Athens, mid-day, July.
His debut album, The Love Album of 2018, obviously dominated the set, and as his performance went on, the audience was getting more and more dancey. The scene happening in front of us was exceptional: Mothers with their babies dancing to his sounds, and at the same time the 60yo guy, right beside them (the one with the Einstürzende Neubauten t-shirt mentioned above), also rocking it! Awesome picture, showing that people were having a good time! Naas pulled it through, even if his sound is not on our first preferences. Layed back, while enjoying the shade of a tree, we observed the events around us. We also danced a bit, needless to say. Well, when you have a million views on every song on youtube, there’s actually no reason to make everybody in the audience a groupie. Sure, though, he could talk less between songs.
Among the songs we listened to, I preferred Please Come Back to Me (third in the set list, and at that point we realized that his voice was really good). I also liked Love and No Love To Risk, where he repeatedly referred to love and the importance of it. The beautiful Strange Love brought to my mind Bronski Beat (of course his voice is quite close to J. Somerville’s sometimes) and of course the track (most of them) proved again his passion for Prince. Certainly his name will be well known in the near future.

One True Pairing
One True Pairing was a rather pleasant surprise in general terms. With a dynamic guitar and distinctive vocals, Thomas Fleming (formerly member of Wild Beasts), and various synths and buttons to accompany him (Don’t remember the keyboardist's name, unfortunately), created a nice sound that people liked, but at the same time gave the impression that something was missing. The debut (a solo project) of Fleming, is quite interesting, not far from what we heard from Wild Beasts. One difference might be the lack of extensive orchestration (especially on the specific gig) that has resulted a bit harsh sound! Personally, I find IT more intriguining, but it definitely needs something to make it smoother. However, the band is very fresh, with their first ever live performance on July 25 -one month before TOdays- and the debut being released later in September. We will keep an eye on them!

Low
In our opinion Low gave the best performance of the first two days and probably of the whole three days of TOdays (mentioning that we didn’t attend day3 with Jarvis, J. Marr etc). They arrived at TOdays (and many summer festivals and gigs) with a great album (Double Negative) praised by websites, critics and audiences. In our opinion, of course, it is not their best ever album, but it was a great opportunity for them to finally receive global recognition, for their fantastic work over the past 26 years!
An amazing visual, musical and spiritual performance! A shocking result, a creepy sound and a visual feast that we can only compare to a Sigur Ros gig. This show was more enjoyable to us than the one in Athens (about a month ago), for a variety of reasons. The most important was the incredible warmth of the Italian audience while welcoming each song, and the apotheosis after the last note of every one of them. It was so intense, that from the reactions (and words) of Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker, you could realize that that they didn't expect it either. Such a response that, even unintentionally, it makes you play even better. Of course the set focused on last year's album with slight touches from the past (No Comprende, Especially Me, Lazy and the awesome Do You Know How to Waltz?, but still not playing our two favorites: In Silence and Monkey) and lots of jamming. It was an experience to remember for a lifetime!

Hozier
On the Hozier's gig, you will allow us not to write many things. We can not go against (not all alone, that is) the whole (or at list a big part of it) music industry. But we think that 60-70 million views in some of his videos leave no doubt to anyone (fan or not), about him! So, music seems to need Hozier (and artists of this kind) which is fine! Our personal record collection doesn’t, anyway!

The End
We took our way back to the hotel just a bit earlier than the ending of Hozier's show, still overwhelmed by the Low's appearance and the great opportunity and honor to meet them up close. Early the next morning, our return to Athens was full of memories and emotions of the past two days at Todays Festival and also with thoughts about the future, anticipating 2020’s line-up.
P.S: TOdays line-up schedule, of course, would continue at the other (indoor) stage, ex Fabbrica Incet, with Cinematic Orchestra και Art Of What?! Both bands are historic, amazing and a real influence for hundreds of other artists. Unfortunately, we were very tired to go on! The hotel bed had started calling for us!
