To ταξίδι μας για…κυνήγι δισκάδικων ανά τον κόσμο, συνεχίζεται. Για την ακρίβεια: ποτέ δεν τελειώνει. Γιατί για το Sliding Backwards, όσα χρόνια και αν περάσουν, όσο και αν «εξελιχθεί» η τεχνολογία, το φυσικό μέσο μετάδοσης της μουσικής αλλά και η προσωπική επαφή με τους ανθρώπους που φροντίζουν να υπάρχουν ακόμα ζωντανοί οι «ναοί της μουσικής», θα είναι αξίες ανεκτίμητες.
Νέος στόχος λοιπόν ήταν το ξετρύπωμα των δισκάδικων της υπέροχης πρωτεύουσας της Ισπανίας, της Μαδρίτης. Της πόλης με τα άπειρα μουσεία, τις εκατοντάδες πλατείες, το μπόλικο πράσινο (όλες εκτός της Αθήνας το διαθέτουν αυτό), την έντονη βαβούρα και με τις δύο μεγάλες ποδοσφαιρικές ομάδες (αυτή που έπαιξε ο Ντέμης και την άλλη).
Το ευρύτερο κέντρο της Μαδρίτης στην ουσία χωρίζεται στα δύο από την Gran Via. Αν δείτε ένα χάρτη της είναι πολύ ξεκάθαρο αυτό. Φανταστείτε ας πούμε μια Σταδίου ή Πανεπιστημίου πολύ μεγαλύτερη αλλά γεμάτη καταστήματα (σαν την Ερμού).
Για πρακτικούς λόγους λοιπόν, χωρίσαμε τα δισκάδικα που βρήκαμε ανάλογα με το που βρίσκονται στο χάρτη σε σχέση με την Gran Via.
Κάτι πολύ σημαντικό που πρέπει να έχετε υπόψη σας είναι ότι στην Ισπανία υπάρχει η μεσημεριανή siesta. Προσοχή μεγάλη λοιπόν στα ωράρια. Πριν ξεκινήσετε για ένα μαγαζί, ρίξτε μια ματιά στις σελίδες του στο internet, για να βεβαιωθείτε ότι δε θα βρείτε κλειστές πόρτες. Ένας γενικός (χωρίς όμως να εφαρμόζεται επακριβώς απ’όλους) κανόνας είναι: 11-15.30 και 17.00-20.30 ανοιχτά. Κλειστά τις Κυριακές.

Να ξαναπούμε πως τα δισκάδικα που μας αρέσουν περισσότερο είναι τα σύγχρονα και ενημερωμένα ενώ σίγουρα το να είναι όμορφος ο χώρος, βοηθά ακόμα περισσότερο.
Πάμε στο ζουμί…

Our journey of hunting record stores around the world continues — or, to be more precise, it never really ends. Because for Sliding Backwards, no matter how many years go by, no matter how much technology “evolves”, the physical way of experiencing music — and the human connection with those who keep the “temples of music” alive — will always remain priceless.
This time, our compass pointed us toward the radiant capital of Spain: Madrid. A city overflowing with museums and plazas, lush greenery, constant motion, and of course, two football giants (the one that Demis Nikolaidis once played for — and the other one). The greater center of Madrid is essentially split in two by Gran Vía — something that becomes immediately clear the moment you glance at a map.
For practical reasons, we’ve organized the record stores we discovered according to their location relative to this famous avenue.

A crucial detail to keep in mind: In Spain they have the midday siesta. So, pay close attention to opening hours — and always check a store’s website before setting out, unless you want to be greeted by closed doors. As a general (though not always reliable) rule, stores are open 11:00–15:30 and 17:00–20:30, and typically closed on Sundays.
We should also remind you that our favorite record stores tend to be those that are modern and up-to-date, though a beautiful space never fails to win us over even more.

So, let’s get to it…

Δισκάδικα Βόρεια της Gran Via / Record Shops North of Gran Via

1. Rotor Discos
Gran Vía, 40 - piso 2 puerta 2 METRO: Callao

Το Rotor είναι από τα παλαιότερα δισκάδικα της πόλης. Δεν βρίσκεται Βόρεια της Gran Via αλλά επί αυτής. Βέβαια όπως καταλαβαίνετε στις εποχές μας, ένα δισκάδικο σε καραεμπορικό δρόμο δε θα μπορούσε να επιβιώσει. Αυτό λοιπόν για να το βρεις μπαίνεις σε είσοδο πολυκατοικίας, κοινωνικοποίησε με τον θυρωρό, σου λέει αν είναι πάνω ο ιδιοκτήτης του μαγαζιού (μην ανεβαίνεις τσάμπα) και σου ανοίγει την πόρτα του ασανσέρ. Σε ένα διαμέρισμα του 2ου ορόφου βρίσκεται το Rotor. Το βασικό του αντικείμενο είναι η ηλεκτρονική μουσική ενώ παράλληλα έχει και δισκογραφική εταιρεία, την Geometrik Records. Ambient, Techno και όλα τα πιθανά παρακλάδια αλλά όχι μόνο. Kαι kraut θα βρείτε και experimental αλλά και industrial μουσικές, καινούριες και παλαιότερες. Φυσικά, ένα μεγάλο μέρος του υλικού προέρχεται από εγχώριους καλλιτέχνες.

Rotor is one of the oldest record stores in the city. It is not located north of Gran Via but on it. Of course, as you understand in our times, a record store on a busy commercial street could not survive. So to find it, you enter the entrance of an apartment building, socialize with the doorman, he informs you if the owner of the store is upstairs (don't go upstairs for no reason) and opens the elevator door for you. Rotor is located in an apartment on the 2nd floor. Its main focus is electronic music, while it also has a record company, Geometrik Records. Ambient, Techno and all possible offshoots, but not only that. Also kraut, experimental and industrial music, new and older. Of course, a large part of the material comes from domestic artists.

2. Lost Things Discos & Libros

Το Lost Things είναι περίπου αυτό που λέει το όνομά του. Θα βρείτε παλιά πράγματα, μεταχειρισμένα σε μέτριες έως καλές τιμές. Έχει πολλά βιβλία (τα περισσότερα στην ισπανική γλώσσα) και φυσικά δίσκους, cds, dvds. Από είδη θα συναντήσετε πολλά και διάφορα αλλά θα έλεγα πως το μεγαλύτερο ποσοστό είναι κλασικό ροκ, Hard rock, jazz, blues αλλά και pop, latin, ακόμα και κλασσική μουσική. Φυσικά, ένα μεγάλο μέρος του υλικού είναι εγχώριοι καλλιτέχνες του παρελθόντος (για τους οποίους δεν είχα καμία απολύτως ιδέα).

Lost Things is pretty much what its name says. You'll find old stuff, second-hand at moderate to good prices. It has a lot of books (most in Spanish) and of course records, cds, dvds. You'll come across a lot of different genres, but I would say that the largest percentage is classic rock, hard rock, jazz, blues, but also pop, latin, even classical music. Of course, a large part of the material is by domestic artists of the past (of whom I had absolutely no idea).

Δεν είναι πολύ του γούστου μου αλλά νομίζω πως ίσως αξίζει η επίσκεψη, ειδικά αν μιλάτε τη γλώσσα και ψάχνετε και βιβλία.
 It's not really to my taste, but I think it might be worth a visit, especially if you speak the language and are also looking for books.

3. Recycled Music Center

Το RMS βρίσκεται πολύ κοντά στο Lost Things (στην πολύ εναλλακτική περιοχή Chueca) και μουσικά μοιάζει πολύ με το Rotor. Επικεντρώνεται σε ηλεκτρονική μουσική (dance, Techno, ambient και όλα τα παρακλάδια) και το υλικό είναι κυρίως μεταχειρισμένο. Τα περισσότερα κομμάτια είναι σε καλή κατάσταση. Μου θύμισε αρκετά το ύφος των δισκάδικων που βρίσκει κανείς στο Βερολίνο.

RMS is located just a short walk from Lost Things, in the ever-alternative Chueca district. Musically, it’s quite similar to Rotor, with a strong focus on electronic sounds — from dance and techno to ambient and their many subgenres. Most of the records are second-hand, yet generally in very good condition. The place has a distinct vibe that immediately brought to mind the kind of record stores you stumble upon in Berlin — understated, curated, and deeply rooted in electronic culture.

4. Faraday

Συνεχίζουμε βόρεια της Gran Via, στην υπέροχη περιοχή Chueca. Το Faraday είναι μακράν από τα πιο όμορφα, μοντέρνα και ζεστά café-δισκάδικα που έχω συναντήσει. Μοσχομυριστός καφές, γλυκά και τοίχοι με δίσκους. Για να είμαι ειλικρινής, είναι πιο πολύ καφέ παρά δισκάδικο. Θα το πρότεινα για να ξεκουραστείτε ευχάριστα από τη βόλτα σας, με ωραίες μουσικές και περιβάλλον, παρά για δισκοκυνήγι. Παρόλ’αυτα, δεν αποκλείω να βρείτε και που να σας ενδιαφέρει. Indie, electro, afro, downtempo και nu jazz τα είδη που κυριαρχούν, στο περιορισμένο υλικό του. Yo La Tengo, Air κλπ… Υπέροχο.

We continue north of Gran Vía, into the wonderful neighborhood of Chueca. Faraday is by far one of the most beautiful, modern, and cozy café-record shops I’ve ever come across. The scent of freshly brewed coffee, sweet treats, and walls lined with vinyls — it’s a delight. To be honest, it’s more of a café than a record store. I’d recommend it more as a lovely spot to relax and unwind from your walk, surrounded by good music and a great atmosphere, rather than as a destination for serious record hunting.
That said, you might still come across something that catches your interest. The small but carefully selected collection focuses on indie, electro, afro, downtempo, and nu jazz — think Yo La Tengo, Air, and the like. Simply wonderful.

5. MARILIANS RECORDS

Ένα από τα 3 αγαπημένα μου δισκάδικα στη Μαδρίτη, μάλλον το καλύτερο. Ένας πανέμορφος designατος και αρκετά μεγάλος χώρος, γεμάτος από φρέσκους δίσκους. Θα βρείτε ότι καινούριο υπάρχει σε indie, post punk, punk, shoegaze, dream pop αλλά και εγχώριους σύγχρονους και θα θέλετε να περάσετε…όλες τις διακοπές σας εκεί μέσα. Ειλικρινά δεν ήξερα τι να πρωτοπάρω.

One of my three favorite record stores in Madrid — probably the best one. A beautifully designed and fairly spacious place, filled with fresh new vinyl releases. You’ll find everything new in indie, post-punk, punk, shoegaze, dream pop, as well as contemporary local artists — and you’ll honestly want to spend your entire vacation inside. I truly didn’t know where to start or what to pick first.

6. Νakasha

Αρκετά καλό και ενημερωμένο μαγαζί. Το πέτυχα βέβαια σε φάση με πολλές χύμα κούτες (τέλος καλοκαιριού γαρ) αλλά είχε αρκετό υλικό από indie, pop, garage, electronica αλλά και δεύτερο χέρι από classic rock, 80s κλπ. Επίσης είχε ένα πολύ μεγάλο τμήμα αφιερωμένο στις εγχώριες μουσικές, όλων των περιόδων. Επίσης είχε πολλών ειδών gadgets σχετικά με τη μουσική, κουκλάκια, μπλούζες, κονκάρδες, slipmat για το pick up σας κ.ο.κ. Από τα ενδιαφέροντα μαγαζιά της πόλης.

A pretty good and well-stocked store. I happened to visit it at a time when there were quite a few boxes scattered around (end of summer, after all), but it still had plenty of material — from indie, pop, garage, and electronica to second-hand classic rock and ’80s records. There was also a large section dedicated to Spanish music from all eras. In addition, the shop offered all sorts of music-related gadgets — figurines, T-shirts, badges, slipmats for your turntable, and so on. Definitely one of the city’s more interesting record stores.

7. Y Que Viva Joplin
C. Martin de los Heros, 32 METRO: Ventura Rodriguez

Το μαγαζί αυτό επικεντρώνεται σε classic rock, 80s pop και rock αλλά και εγχώριους καλλιτέχνες. Έχει περισσότερα cds παρά βινύλια και ως επι το πλείστον το υλικό είναι δεύτερο χέρι. Δεν έχει ιδιαίτερα πολλά κομμάτια, ο χώρος δεν ήταν ωραίος και δε θα έλεγα πως εντυπωσιάστηκα από κάτι.

This store focuses mainly on classic rock, ’80s pop and rock, as well as local artists. It carries more CDs than vinyl, and most of the stock is second-hand. The selection isn’t particularly large, the space itself isn’t very appealing, and overall, I can’t say I was especially impressed.

8. CHOPPER MONSTER
Corre Alta de San Pablo, 21 METRO: Tribunal (ανοιχτό και Κυριακή)

To Chopper Monster δεν είναι ακριβώς ή έστω δεν είναι ΜΟΝΟ δισκάδικο. Ναι μεν έχει αρκετούς δίσκους, το μεγαλύτερο κομμάτι όμως είναι διάφορα είδη όπως στολίδια, ρούχα, παπούτσια, γυαλιά, είδη για ποδήλατο, είδη δώρων κ.ο.κ. Οι (αρκετοί) δίσκοι που έχει είναι surf, ska, punk ενώ και εδώ δεν λείπουν οι εγχώριοι καλλιτέχνες, των συγκεκριμένων ειδών πάντα. Ωραίο μαγαζί, αξίζει ένα πέρασμα.

Chopper Monster isn’t exactly — or at least not only — a record store. Yes, it does have a decent selection of vinyl, but most of the space is devoted to various other items: decorations, clothes, shoes, sunglasses, bicycle gear, gifts, and so on. The records it does carry focus mainly on surf, ska, and punk, with a fair number of local artists in those genres as well. It’s a cool spot overall — definitely worth stopping by.

9 JAZZYMAS

Κοντά στην περιοχή αυτή, πέριξ της υπέροχης πλατείας Plaza de los de Mayo υπάρχει και το Jazzymas. Διάβασα και άκουσα πως είναι αξιόλογο και αν και δεν το βρήκα ανοιχτό τις μέρες που πήγα στην πόλη, το βάζω στη λίστα για να το έχετε υπόψη σας.

Near this area, around the beautiful Plaza de los de Mayo, you’ll also find Jazzymas. I’ve read and heard that it’s a noteworthy spot, and although it was closed during my visit to the city, I’m including it here so you can keep it in mind.

10. FNAC
C. de Goya, 42 ΜETRO: Goya

Στην upper class, πανέμορφη περιοχή που ονομάζεται Salamanca (κάτι σαν το Κολωνάκι ας πούμε της Μαδρίτης) βρίσκεται το Fnac. H γαλλική αλυσίδα πολυκαταστημάτων που κάποτε υπήρχε και στην Ελλάδα, έχει κάποια μαγαζιά και στην Μαδρίτη. Σε αυτό θα βρείτε μεν υλικό, κυρίως βέβαια εγχώρια pop, rock, hip hop, αλλά όπως συμβαίνει παντού (και στα δικά μας αντίστοιχα πολυκαταστήματα) ο χώρος που αφιερώνουν για μουσική όλο και περιορίζεται.

In the upper class, beautiful area called Salamanca (something like Kolonaki, let's say, in Madrid) is Fnac. The French department store chain that once existed in Greece also has some stores in Madrid. Here you will find material, mainly domestic pop, rock, hip hop, but as is the case everywhere (and in our own corresponding department stores) the space they dedicate to music is increasingly limited.
