Μέρος της απόλαυσης του να πηγαίνεις σε συναυλία στο εξωτερικό είναι όλα τα σχετικά με τη φάση, τα γύρω-γύρω, σε βαθμό που καμιά φορά να περνάει σε δεύτερη μοίρα το ίδιο το γεγονός. Για εμάς ισχύει αυτό κάθε φορά, από την πρώτη (περίπου 20 χρόνια πριν) μέχρι και σήμερα. Έτσι και στη Μαδρίτη και στο The 27 Club τον Αύγουστο του 2025, αισθάνθηκα ότι είδαμε πολλά περισσότερα από μια συναυλία, ζήσαμε ένα μικρό αλλά περιεκτικότατο ταξίδι. Η δε απόδοση των Αμερικανών The Warlocks, ήταν καταπληκτική απ’όλες τις απόψεις.

Η συναυλία της 20/8, συνέπεσε με το βράδυ της ημέρας που φτάσαμε στη Μαδρίτη, με μεταμεσονύκτια μάλιστα πτήση. Έτσι, ένας φόβος μήπως η ενέργεια μας δεν ήταν αρκετή, υπήρχε. Όπως αποδείχτηκε στην εξέλιξη της βραδιάς, το κοινό και η μπάντα είχαν τέτοιο δυναμισμό που «φόρτισαν» για τα καλά και τις δικές μας μπαταρίες.
Το The 27 Club βρίσκεται σε μία πολύ όμορφη περιοχή της Μαδρίτης και είναι στην ουσία ένα bar στο οποίο ενίοτε γίνονται και live.
Αρχίσαμε να καταλαβαίνουμε ότι πλησιάζουμε στο μέρος, κάνα δύο στενά νωρίτερα όταν είδαμε την ίδια την μπάντα να κινείται…αντίθετα από εμάς, προφανώς πηγαίνοντας για μία μικρή βόλτα (ή κάτι τέτοιο) στην περιοχή. Όταν φτάσαμε, μία ώρα περίπου πριν την έναρξη, περίπου 10-15 άτομα είχαν μαζευτεί έξω από το 27 Club. Μπλούζες The Bryan Johnstown Massacre, Sonic Youth κ.ο.κ μας επιβεβαίωσαν πως είμαστε στο σωστό μέρος. Σύντομα δημιουργήθηκε μία ουρά 60-80 ατόμων και όταν μπήκαμε στο χώρο μας υποδέχτηκε προσωπικά η ευγενέστατη και εγκάρδια Vanessa, από την All Waves Promotions, την εταιρεία που διοργάνωνε τη βραδιά.

Ο χώρος ήταν μακρόστενος με ένα bar στην είσοδο και ένα στην άλλη άκρη του. Έμοιαζε με παλαιού τύπου pub, καλαίσθητος, με αφίσες από ταινίες και μπάντες παντού, ήταν όμως και ανακαινισμένος με πρόσφατες ξύλινες κατασκευές και φρεσκοβαμμένος. Ενδιάμεσα, χωμένη πίσω από μία από τις κολώνες ήταν μία πολύ μικρή σκηνή που μου προκάλεσε απορία ως προς το πως θα χωρούσαν πέντε μουσικοί σε αυτήν.
Ο χώρος δε γέμισε, όμως κατά την έναρξη του live πρέπει να υπήρχαν 100-130 άτομα. Βέβαια σε αυτές τις περιπτώσεις των συναυλιών, δε μετράει τελικά τόσο ο αριθμός όσο η διάθεση, η απόδοση της μπάντας αλλά και η αλληλεπίδρασή της με το κοινό. Η ατμόσφαιρα που δημιουργήθηκε από τους The Warlocks ήταν καταπληκτική. H μεθυστική αλλά ταυτόχρονα έντονα ρυθμική μουσική και τα ελαφρώς παράφωνα και υπνωτισμένα φωνητικά δεν άφησαν κανένα ασυγκίνητο. Το κοινό χόρευε καθ’όλη τη διάρκεια, συχνά τραγουδούσε στίχους και διαρκώς επευφημούσε την μπάντα (τα «μπράβο!», τα σφυρίγματα και τα “yeah!” ήταν συνεχή). Αυτό γενικώς είναι μία σημαντική διαπίστωση και για τις διοργανώσεις στην Ελλάδα. Όταν ξέρεις ή βλέπεις ότι η προσέλευση θα είναι μικρή, κλείνεις μικρό και ζεστό χώρο και βοηθάς κατά πολύ την εξέλιξη της βραδιάς.

Η μικρή σκηνή δεν αποδείχτηκε πρόβλημα καθώς με λίγο στρίμωγμα, 2 μπροστά (κιθάρα/φωνητικά-μπάσο) -2 πίσω (κιθάρα, ντραμς) και ένας κρυμμένος(με ακόμα μία κιθάρα) πίσω από την κολώνα, έγινε μία χαρά η δουλειά, όσο και αν στην αρχή φαινόταν περίεργο.
Η συναυλία πραγματοποιήθηκε στα πλαίσια της προώθησης του The Manic Excessive Sounds Of (ακούσαμε 3-4 κομμάτια από αυτόν), του 13ου στούντιο άλμπουμ της μπάντας από το Λος Αντζελες, της οποίας η ιστορία μετρά 27 χρόνια και συνεχίζεται. Συνοδοιπόροι στον ήχο αυτό, το συνδυασμό νέο-ψυχεδέλειας με garage και shoegaze, με τους The Bryan Jonestown Massacre και τους Dandy Warhols, με λιγότερη ίσως φήμη αλλά με εξίσου σημαντική δισκογραφία, οι Warlocks μας άφησαν τις καλύτερες εντυπώσεις. Το ίδιο έκανε και το Μαδριλένικο κοινό, που είχε απίστευτο κέφι και μπρίο και ανάγκασε την μπάντα να βγει για 2 encore, με τη συναυλία να κρατά σχεδόν δυο ώρες.

2 encore στα οποία πραγματικά έγινε ο ψυχεδέλο-χαμός με μουσικάρες, τζαμαρίσματα (τι κομματάρα το instrumental You Stooge You, η δε live εκτέλεση του Angry Demons τα σπάει!) και τρομερή συμμετοχή απ’όλο το κοινό, που κατέληξε να είναι μία παρέα.
Όλοι στο τέλος φύγαμε με ένα χαμόγελο, πόδια να πονάνε και τσέπη να…παρακαλεί να σταματήσουμε τις μπύρες και τις αγορές από το merch!

Μιλώντας νωρίτερα για την, φίλη μας πλέον, Vanessa, πρέπει να σημειώσω πως ήταν εντυπωσιακό ότι τα έκανε όλα: Έβγαζε videos, μιλούσε με τον κόσμο, έκανε τις συνεννοήσεις με την μπάντα για ό,τι προέκυπτε, φρόντιζε ώστε άνθρωποι με κινητικά προβλήματα να έχουν τις καλύτερες θέσεις. Πραγματικά αεικίνητη.
Ευχόμαστε σύντομα οι The Warlocks να ξαναέρθουν στην Ελλάδα και να έχουν τα κέφια που είχαν στη Μαδρίτη. Αν και δεν είναι ο ρόλος μου αυτός, μια πρώτη συζήτηση έγινε, εκεί στο merch…

Part of the pleasure of attending a concert abroad lies in everything surrounding it—the atmosphere, the setting—to the extent that sometimes the event itself becomes a second priority. For us, this has always been the case, from our very first gig nearly 20 years ago up until today. So, in Madrid, at The 27 Club, it felt like we experienced something more than just a live show. It was a small but fully immersive journey. And the performance by the American band The Warlocks was truly amazing in every way.
The concert on August 20th happened to coincide with the evening of our arrival in Madrid, following a midnight flight. We were worried we might be too exhausted to enjoy it. But as it turned out, the energy of both the band and the audience was so strong that it completely recharged us.

The 27 Club is located in a beautiful part of Madrid and is essentially a bar that occasionally hosts gigs. We knew we were close when, just a couple of streets away, we saw the band members themselves walking opposite us—apparently out for a short stroll. When we arrived about an hour before the show, there were around 10–15 people already gathered outside. T-shirts featuring The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Sonic Youth, and others reassured us that we were in the right place.
Soon, a queue of 60–80 people had formed. Upon entering, we were warmly greeted by the lovely Vanessa from All Waves Promotions, the organizers of the evening.
The venue was long and narrow, with a bar at the entrance and another at the back. It had the feel of an old-style pub, with movie and band posters everywhere, but it had also been recently renovated with fresh wooden structures and newly painted walls. Tucked behind a column was a tiny stage that made me wonder how five musicians were going to fit on it.

The place wasn’t packed, but by the time the concert started, there were about 100–130 people inside. Of course, at gigs like this, the number of attendees isn’t nearly as important as the energy, the band’s performance, and the connection with the audience. And The Warlocks created an incredible atmosphere. Their hypnotic yet driving music, combined with slightly dissonant and trance-like vocals, left no one indifferent. The crowd danced throughout, sang along to many lyrics, and cheered the band constantly with cries of “Bravo!”, whistles, and “Yeah!”
This is a good reminder for similar events in Greece: when turnout is expected to be modest, booking a small, intimate venue can make all the difference in creating a magical evening.
Despite its size, the stage worked out fine. With a bit of squeezing, two musicians were positioned up front (guitar/vocals and bass), two in the back (guitar and drums), and another guitarist partly hidden behind the column. It might have looked odd, but it worked perfectly.

The concert was part of the promotion for The Manic Excessive Sounds Of, the band’s 13th studio album. We heard three or four tracks from it. With a 27-year history, The Warlocks—fellow travelers in the soundscape of neo-psychedelia, garage, and shoegaze—stand alongside bands like The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols. They may be less famous, but their discography is equally essential, and they left us with an excellent impression.
The same can be said for the Madrid audience, who were lively, joyful, and totally into it. They even brought the band out for two encores, stretching the concert close to two hours.
Those two encores were where true psychedelic chaos unfolded. The musicians jammed (what a track You Stooge You is! And the live version of Angry Demons was just a killer!), and the audience was fully engaged, to the point where it felt more like a gathering of friends than a formal concert.
We all left smiling, our feet aching, and our wallets begging us to stop buying beers and merch!
Earlier, I mentioned our new friend Vanessa. I must say, she was incredible—filming the band, chatting with the crowd, coordinating everything with the musicians, making sure people with mobility issues had the best seats. She was unstoppable.
We hope The Warlocks will soon return to Greece and enjoy it just as much as they did in Madrid. While it’s not officially my role, let’s just say… a first conversation did happen, over at the merch table.
